Schema to database mapping??

Hi all,
              I have two queries.

1) I have an attribute which is of type integer. How can I write this attribute
into my database using ldap_add_s. The structure LDAPMod
     supports only two kinds of values a) character arrays(NULL terminated) b)
binary values.  Should I input value as a string and then
     retrieve them by converting string to integer??

    Is there some other way out.

2) Can someone tell me how our schema gets mapped to the (key,value) pair in the
backend database.
    Or any references???
