Nameserver using LDAP?

I believe I set everything up using ldap as a host database.

I setup /etc/nsswitch.conf and added ipHosts to my ldap server.

But, I can only get an IP from a hostname when using ping or traceroute.
If I use another program, like ssh, or telnet, I get the following
error: No address associated with hostname

So, why can ping and traceroute and get the IP but not with any other
program?

I can do an anonymous search (ldapsearch) and get a return on a specific
host. I must be missing something...
