solaris 8 pam ldap/tls problems

I'm using OpenLDAP 2.0.19 on Solaris 8, with PADL's pam_ldap 135.  TLS
is from OpenSSL.

Authentication works fine.  Password changes, however, do not.

$ passwd
passwd:  Changing password for testuser
sockbuf.c:75: failed assertion `sb != NULL'
Abort

Has anyone else experienced this problem?
