server won't start

I thought I'd done everything correctly in setting things up, but i get
the following result (w/ 2.0.18 on debian woody)


slapd startup: initiated.
backend_startup: bi_open 0 failed!
slapd shutdown: initiated
ldbm backend syncing
ldbm backend done syncing

I may have screwed up one of my custom schema entries (or perhaps the
ACL entries in slapd.conf?) but when I run slapd with -d -1   I don't
see any errors reported.
