try to start openldap in debug mode :

/opt/ldap/openldap/libexec/slapd -d 1

slapd 1.2.13-Engineering (Mon Dec 10 09:34:23 GMT 2001)


you have version and build date....

I don't know if it work with openldap 2.x, but it should.
