Its always good when u can answer your own question.

I solved the problem... as I suspected deep down, it was a bug in my
application. Although there were 500+ entries in LDAP, only 500 of them
contained valid data (according to my application)... So it was just
a co-incidence that i kept on getting 500 entries..

Sorry to cast doubt in anybodies mind about the functionality of sizelimit
in slapd.conf.
