connection management problem?

Are there any known bugs in the way that OpenLDAP manages open socket
connections?
My problem is that after I keep some connections open overnight (I've pooled
connections to an application server), I can't establish any _new_
connections to the LDAP server. When I try to, top shows that the CPU usage
and iowait spike to 100% on the LDAP server.
Our syslog server just came online, so I'm going to try to repro with
debugging on... but until then, any ideas?
