slapd not writing to replog?

I've got slapd running nicely on two machines, but I'm finding that slapd on
the master isn't writing to replog at all, so no replication is being done.

slapd.conf:

replica host=localhost:390
binddn="..."
bindmethod=simple credentials=secret
replogfile /usr/local/etc/openldap/replog

Once modifications are made, replog and replog.lock are created, but they're
zero-length, and nothing is ever written to them.

(localhost:390 is an SSH tunnel to the actual slave box, and the binddn is
set to the rootdn and updatedn on the slave.)

Any ideas on what I've done wrong?
