SSL and openldap 2.0.14

I'm having problems with SSL connections to an LDAP server running 2.0.14;
connections worked fine (i think) against 2.0.11.

I've built against openssl 0.9.6b and am using a self-signed cert. The
common name of the cert is set correctly. (to the FQDN of the LDAP server.)
But still SSL connections seem to fail.

Has anything changed? Do I need to do something different?
