For using OpenLDAP as a address-book server, this page is a good start:

but all it really does is point to the real Netscape page at:

   http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/communicator/ldap45.htm


The real key point (before I got anything to work) was putting

  pref("ldap_2.servers.megacorp.searchBase", "ou=People,dc=truedisk,dc=com");

in my $HOME/.netscape/preferences.js file.
