For further info;

I dumped the readable bits of WAB32.DLL (W98SE/O2K installation) and found
some interesting words. It might be fair to say that it searches
objectclass=person then objectclass=*.

I guess then that the best idea would be to produce a schema for 2.x
specifically for Outlook address books and maybe create a person as well as
addressbook record.

Mmmm more thinking to do...
