            'cn'    => [ 'Chris Sheeran', 'Chris T. Sheeran', 'CT Sheeran']
                );
$entry->update($ldap);    # $ldap is reference returned from Net::LDAP->new

works for me, though still using OpenLDAP 1.2.11
