Number of threads executed...

Hi,
 I am using Openldap 2.0.7 on Linux. When I start slapd and then start an 
ldapadd which is adding 5000 objects into openldap, I see 12 instances of 
Openldap when I do ps. Does anybody know why so many threads or processes 
are forked? Is there a relation to the number of threads required to 
operate?
