referrals not working with 1.2.11

         Hi, I can not get referrals to work with Openldap 1.2.11 running on
FreeBSD 4.0. I built the
program with the configuration option set to "--enable-referrals". My
slapd.conf file has the following
line in it:

referral		ldap://red-baron.ism.comversens.com:389/
 
I also tried it with the IP address and without the port number. All gave
the same results, which
was "object not found".

The server red-baron has the entry that I am looking for. Is there anything
special that I have to do to 
the referred server? Is referrals enable by default? Any help would be
appreciated.
