Directory Server Tuning

I've been playing around with tuning OpenLDAP,
performing benchmarks on various ldif sizes, and
noticed that performing deletes is terribly slow. 
1000 entries took 5 seconds to add/modify using
ldapmodify, but took 52 seconds to delete when using
ldapmodify or ldapdelete.

Is there any method of increasing delete performance?

For reference, the OS is solaris 2.6, single 440 mhz,
768 main memory, and 1.6 gb virtual mem.
