pam woes

hello, im having a little trouble with PAM getting to authenticate with ldap, ive installed nss_ldap and pam_ldap. when i try and ftp using an ldap user, /var/log/messages says no such user, however when i do something like adduser john (who is just identified in the ldap db, not /etc/passwd) i get an error message saying user already exists.
im not quite sure whats going on, anyone have a clue?
