alternative user authentication for openLDAP

Hi All,

    I'm a relative newbie to openLDAP and I'm trying to set up the server
with an alternative method of user authentication.  From what I gather in
the FAQs and archived postings, the default method is clients bind via the
dn and the stored userPassword attribute in schema.  (and it's possible for
openLDAP to import passwd files to add users and such).  But is it possible
to have openLDAP use another database for user authentication?  ie not
storing the password information within openLDAP and instead have openLDAP
refer to something else?
