How to know that it is workin???

Hi

I have installed SLAPD on SOLARIS 2.6 with Berkley DMS.
When i give it a command
% ./local/libexec/slapd -f ./local/etc/openldap/slapd.conf -d 1 -p 2400
then it gives 
slapd starting.

After this it does nothing,now how can i monitor that it is running and
how can i install clients and make queries.
I am a new user so please be patient with me and reply in detail
I will be grateful for any help that anybody can prrovide
