They don't, by far. There has been some discussion on the perl-ldap list
(which discusses Net::LDAP) regarding this and big speed differences have
been found. They can be lessened by specific coding, but its still a lot
slower.

Additionally, for a module as big as Net::LDAP, initial load/interpret
takes *long*.
