slapd <defunct> when running tests

Hi all,

I'm seeing some rather wierd behavior when running make in the tests
directory. Maybe i'm missing something basic but can't seem to figure
it out. ./configure, make depend and make completes without warnings or
errors.

I'm running Slackware 4.0 with a 2.2.6 kernel (64MB ram), Berkeley DB2 2.7.7
and the OpenLDAP-stable (1.2.6 i believe).

My configure command looks like this:

#!/bin/sh

export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/BerkeleyDB/include -I/usr/local/include"
export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/BerkeleyDB/lib -L/usr/local/lib"

rm config.cache
rm include/portable.h

./configure --enable-cleartext \
        --enable-ldbm \
        --with-ldbm-api=db2 \
        --enable-crypt \
        --enable-wrappers

On the first run. the test script is hanging when starting the test002
Waiting 5 seconds for slapd to start...

On run 2. the script is hanging when starting the test003
Waiting 5 seconds for slapd to start...

On run 3. the script is hanging when starting the test007
Waiting 5 seconds for slapd to start...

On run 4. the script is hanging after test003 has started
Waiting 5 seconds for slapd to start...
	Testing exact searching...
	Testing OR searching...

On run 5. the script is hanging when starting the test007
Waiting 5 seconds for slapd to start...

After each run i see a "slapd <defunct>" in the process list, Like this:

 S 0:00 make
 S 0:00 /bin/sh -c echo "Initiating LDAP tests..."; mkdir -p test-db test-repl;
 S 0:00 sh ./scripts/all .
 S 0:00 sh ./scripts/test007-replication . ldbm
 S 0:00 ../servers/slapd/slapd -f ./data/slapd-repl-master.conf -p 9009 -d 5
 S 0:00 ../servers/slapd/slapd -f ./data/slapd-repl-slave.conf -p 9010 -d 5
 Z 0:00 [slapd <defunct>]
 S 0:00 ../servers/slapd/slapd -f ./data/slapd-repl-master.conf -p 9009 -d 5
 S 0:00 ../servers/slapd/slapd -f ./data/slapd-repl-slave.conf -p 9010 -d 5
 S 0:00 ../servers/slapd/slapd -f ./data/slapd-repl-slave.conf -p 9010 -d 5
 S 0:00 ../clients/tools/ldapsearch -L -b o=University of Michigan, c=US -h
local

So if anybody out there has any ideas/hints on what my problem might be,
i'll be most greatfull to hear from you.
