I tend to shy away from anything that requires a patch to apache, I prefer
modules.

I've had good luck with mod_ldap from
http://kie.berkeley.edu/people/jmorrow/mod_ldap/.  My only problem is that
I haven't gotten it working with Openldap 2.0.7 yet, but it works fine
