Thanks for the helpful comments (and to others who answered my query in
private email).
The LDAP directory went live at the start of term, with all our Unix systems
authenticating users to it. It survived the onslaughts of Freshers Week and
all the hectic activity of week 1 of term. Here's hoping...!
