New to Directory Server

Hi,
I am an intern and have only have recently started studying the concept of a
Directory Server. I have one very basic question- my company is interested
in installing a Directory Server which can interact with a Microsft Exchange
Server and a Send Mail 8.9.3
Can anybody give me suggestions? I have been reading up on the ones
available currently - Netscape Directory Server, Microsoft Active Directory,
etc. but am unable to decide.
