Yes! In a replicated environments where certain ou's sit on either side of slow WAN links this is ideal. It is also used extensively by us for authentication. Most apps do not understand hierarchical directories and only work in flat environments. So we are forced to alias users into ou's (containers) which only the application knows about. The application then authenticates against the aliased copy of the users info.
