Actually, DSE stands for "DSA Specific Entry".  DSA is "Directory System
Agent", which you can think of as a server... so a DSE is a directory
server-specific entry.  A common example is the rootDSE, named by the
zero-length DN, which is used by LDAPv3 servers to publish information
about the server itself.
