ldapsearch problems

I assume I've done something really stupid to cause slapd to do this,
but when I run ldapsearch I get the following error.  I would love to
provide debug output, but the debug levels don't seem to work.  I am
using openldap 1.1 on RedHat 5.1.

Here is the output:

[root@ens bin]# ./ldapsearch cn=Keith      
ldap_search: DSA is unwilling to perform

If more info is needed (my slapd.conf or instance) I will post it.
