I think it's not good idea? becose many Linux distrib use dynamic linked
libraries.
I'm a mainteiner of OpenLDAP package for ALT Linux Distrib (Russia) and our
libtool hacker (LDV) made some patches for our libtool package and correct in
OpenLDAP package. The patch for Openldap is
# Purge dependency_libs from .la files.
%__subst -p
's/^\(dependency_libs=\).*/\1'\'\'/$RPM_BUILD_ROOT%_libdir/%name/*. la
and changelog is
* Wed Dec 03 2003 Dmitry V. Levin <ldv at altlinux.org> 2.1.23-alt3
- libldap-devel: do not package .la files.
- openldap-servers: purge dependency_libs from .la files.
