How about setting them only if no slapd.conf rootDSE directive is given (and documenting that it overrides these two values)?

I rather not encourage use of these attributes. IMO, the only time they should be set is when some stupid ass client won't work unless it certain values (those generated by non-OpenLDAP servers) are provided.

I disagree. I remember that some people already asked for this on openldap-users. They'd like to query those values for administration purposes. E.g. scan all your OpenLDAP server replicas for determining which ones need to be upgraded.


Ok, ldap:///cn=monitor?description might also be of help for this task. But it does not seem to be well-structured.
