Group permissions and threads

I gather that the group permissions are still not functioning correctly 
when using the BerkeleyDB 4. From looking through the archives, am I 
correct in assuming that this is a conflict when using the backend with 
threads?

Would the problems exist if the server is compiled without threads? Would 
the choice of an alternative backend avoid this problem?
