OpenLDAP Documentation/Instructions?

I am newbie to OpenLDAP (and LDAP in general), and am trying to create my
own simple LDAP client in C. I have installed OpenLDAP on my Linux machine,
but cannot find any documentation on how to use the OpenLDAP libraries.

So far I have been mimicking what is done in the ldapclient.c program, but I
can't even get ldapclient to work either. I always get a bind error. Is
there an example of how to use that program as well?
