Basically, I guess, gluing together backends is INTERNAL, while
back-meta works on LDAP protocol and can connect INTERNAL
as well as EXTERNAL (i.e. remote) databases; actually it may result
a bit heavy when connectiong only internal databases, unless one
uses ldapi://; and there's still the overhead of performing all operations
at least twice, while the internal solution could possibly be achieved
by passing Entry * pointers back and forth.

None I'm aware of.  I've been doing some independent developing
on a lot of small enhancements, including the back-meta.  I'm surely
interested in working on the subject.  I think we've started an interesting
discussion, though.
