implementing ber-encoding

can anyone help with pointing out resources for doing ber-encoded data
transfers from an LDAP client app (written on top of the Netscape Java SDK)?
examples perhaps... i'm trying to write out a userCertificate to the LDAP
database, but the manner in which i'm constructing the LDAPAttribute is
incorrect for the userCert... documentation  on how to implement this in
particular is scant... any help would be appreciated...
