Has anybody considered writing a "back-dynamic" and solving this
problem once and for all?  You could just load shared libraries at
runtime and not have to include them in the build at all.  It would
also make distribution of strange and wonderful back-ends much
easier.

I might even do this myself if I ever get my first project working.
