Slapd built with ndbm is such a cripple that I think ndbm should be disabled by default. That is, if configure would choose ndbm, it should abort and ask for help unless it received --disable-slapd (so ndbm isn't needed) or --with-ndbm. It's better to have openldap build less smoothly than to discover too late that one has installed a slapd which doesn't work. -- Hallvard
