callback modification handling occurs __after__ regular processing; as such,
regular processing may complain about unknown modificatons.  It looks correct
that regular processing complains if some modifications cannot be handled,
otherwise invalid modifications would breeze thru unnoticed.  But this requires
custom modifications to be handled __before__ getting to regular handling, and
custom modifications should then be removed from the modifications list.

This is now fixed in HEAD/re23.

Further needs for custom data handling enhancements will be discussed in a more
appropriate forum.
