(ITS#4173) slapd sends bad LDAP responses

I have a bdb database with syncprov overlay configured as indicated in the
User's Guide :

overlay syncprov
syncprov-checkpoint <ops> <minutes>
syncprov-sessionlog <size>

I use OpenLdap ldaptools to add and delete entries into my directory.
I notice that slapd sends a "Modify Result" instead of "Add Result" or "Delete
result" every <ops> operations.
If I comment out the line "syncprov-checkpoint" the problem disapears.

Also I notice that the ldaptools (ldapadd and ldapdelete) do not contest this. 
But if I use a JNDI application it raises an "operations exception" (LDAP code
1).

I can provide slapd detailed logs as well as tetherreal traces if required.
