There was some cleanup and improvement in back-meta recently; it's under
the OPENLDAP_REL_ENG_2_2 CVS tag, scheduled for 2.2.20.  The fixes address
a wrong pointer usage in DN rewriting (e.g. suffix massage) and other
memory issues (allocation in temporary pools of persistent meory bits). 
Could you see if this also addressed your issue?  Thanks.
