Keep getting "connection from unknown (10.205.209.79) denied" (ITS#815)

LDAP works just fine, except for one client:
with loglevel 256, I keep getting:

Oct 10 14:15:23 lus01 slapd[678]: fd=8 connection from unknown (10.205.209.79)
denied.

There's no IPCHAINS on the box, pinging the client and vice versa works fine

slapd.conf lists:
access to * by * read                                                           
                                               

I'm totally dumbfounded about this one!
