OpenLDAP Faq-O-Matic : General LDAP FAQ : Public LDAP Services : OpenLDAP LDAP Root Service
The OpenLDAP Project (http://www.openldap.org/) is operating an
experimental global root LDAP server suitable for use as a default
referral service. The service operates as described in RFC 3088.
The server will respond with a referral for LDAP operations where
the DN of the operation:
1) uses Internet (DC) style naming 2) ldap SRV resource records are available via the Domain Name Service (DNS).The service will respond with noSuchObject for DNs not meeting these requirements [including all X.500 (organizational) style DNs]. There is no registration required to use this free service. This service is experimental (see disclaimer below).

How does this work? What are Internet (DC) style DNs? What are traditional X.500 organizational DNs? Can I locate traditional X.500 style DNs using this service? How do I setup DNS such that my LDAP service can be located? Where can I find technical references regarding this service? How do I configure my server to return a referral to this service? Does the service support LDAPv3? Does the service support LDAPv2+? Does the service support LDAPv2? What software does this service run? Can you show me the service in action?
